Day 30: Aug 2 (Beach House)

Today we did not go any where. However, I would like to share a few things that we have observed about this Area and Alaska.

Have you ever heard about Dip Netting?  In March 1996, the board of Fisheries amended the Cook Inlet Personal Use Salmon Management Plan by liberalizing it and establishing a personal use fishery season for Alaska residents. The dipnet season on the Kenai Peninsula is currently July 10 through July 31 and requires a personal use fishery permit. Mid-July marks the beginning of dip netting season for Alaskan residents. To dip net, anglers stand in the mouth of the Kenai River holding large nets with long handles.  Dip netting is open to Alaska residents ONLY! However, it was interesting to go to the mouth of the river and observe this, which we did last Sat. No one caught any Red Salmon while we were there.

It seems to us that the State of Alaska and Alaskan Businesses do take care of the Alaskan Residents. When ever we make hotel reservations, we are always asked if we are  Alaska residents. Alaskans get discounts for some hotels and restaurants.  Alaskans also get annual Kick-backs from the Oil Business.

Alaskans have a knack at fixing, making, building and living with what they have in there possession. We have seen a few residents that have everything in there yard. Jeff found out why! Going to Home Depot is not just a short trip. Even making it to Home Depot does not mean they will have what you need----so improvising is required frequently. Alaskans are definitely individualists. Here are a few pictures to show what I mean.

House built that looks like an igloo, made out of ???

House on wheels:

This boat was in what appeared a boat junk yard, but it also looked as if someone lived in it. It had potted plants and flowers on the deck.
These are just a few dwellings that we saw, that made us believe that Alaskans are very resourceful.

So right now it is 9:36pm and the sun is shinning bright. I took this picture out of our Bedroom window!!

*Let the SUN SHINE IN!!
